8:12 am on 16 February 2004

Three investigators from the United States Department of Labour are in American Samoa making random checks of local companies to see that they are in compliance with Labour laws.

The officials are from the Wage and Hour Division, which does not have the authority for unannounced checks.

But,one restaurant owner, John Newton, alleges that the investigators were demanding records and speaking to employees.

He asked the investigators to leave his restaurant until they had obtained a court order for the handing over of company records.
