Vanuatu capital blocked by damage from Cyclone Ivy

9:29 am on 28 February 2004

The New Zealand High Commissioner in Vanuatu, Bryan Smythe, says damage from Tropical Cyclone Ivy is causing major delays to the capital's port.

Speaking in Port Moresby, Mr Smythe says there is concern about oil leaking from two fishing boats which sank in the harbour during the storm.

The sunken boats are blocking container ships from getting into port

Mr Smythe says other forms of transport have also been affected by Cyclone Ivy.

"There's also a problem at the airport. A consignement of fuel was delayed by the cyclone so there's not enough fuel for the commercial airlines to keep on flying through till Tuesday when new supplies are expected to come on stream."

Brian Smyhte says Air Vanuatu has confirmed that today's flight to Auckland will be as normal, but after that flights will be delayed or diverted to New Caledonia to pick up fuel there.

He adds that problems contacting the outer islands means there's a shortage of information about how they've been affected by Cyclone Ivy.
