France publishes new organic law for French Polynesia

The new organic law defining French Polynesia's autonomy statute has been published in the French official journal.

This comes after President Jacques Chirac last week promulgated the new law as well as the law completing the new statute that has turned the territory into a so-called overseas country within the French republic.

Two weeks ago, the French constitutional council passed the statute which gives the administration in Papeete more powers in a range of areas, such as the labour market and civil rights.

The changes were not put to a referendum in French Polynesia and have been criticised by the territory's opposition which claims the new statute enhances the position of the territory's president, Gaston Flosse.
