Fiji minister says vested interests are opposed to constitutional amendments

2:37 pm on 3 March 2004

Fiji's minister of information, Simione Kaitani, says people opposed to politicians holding a second public office, have vested interests.

He says the government and the Fiji Labour party both want amendments made to the constitution to allow MPs to be members of the Great Council of chiefs, the GCC, and other bodies such as provincial councils.

The chairman of the GCC and the Citizens Constitutional Forum are opposed to the move.

But Mr Kaitani says MPs want to participate in decision making at those levels.

And, he says the constitution is preventing a traditional right from being exercised.

"We have chiefs, who by virtue of being a paramount chief - they have a right under our own tradition to sit in the Great Council of Chiefs. And, this provision in the constitution is not allowing that to take place."

Simione Kaitani.

The head of the CCF, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says the move would give politicians too much control.

Any amendment to the constitution requires the support of two-thirds of the MPs in parliament.
