There's strong speculation in Fiji that a 67 year old retired civil servant and head of the local Church of God is to be appointed the country's next ambassador to Washington.

Radio Fiji has named him as Ratu Epeli Kanaimawai, who was secretary of the agriculture ministry at the time of his retirement.

The state radio says it has learnt that the foreign ministry is now working to gain Washington's agreemet to the posting.

He is to replace Anare Jale who has returned to Fiji to once again head the Public Service Commission.
