Dissent over American Samoan celebration

4:30 pm on 16 March 2004

The Tau village supreme council in American Samoa has decided that it doesn't want the Centennial Manua Flag Raising celebration to be held on village grounds.

The area is the traditional seat of the former King Tui Manua.

The village of Tau plans to boycott the ceremony due to be held in July, marking 100 years since the Manu'a island group became part of the United States.

The village council says it won't physically stop the ceremony.
