Niue premier says aid to pay for houses damaged by cyclone

The Niue Premier, Young Vivian, says much of a 25 million US dollar recovery plan the government has drawn up has focussed on rebuilding or repairing 260 houses on the island.

Much of Niue was wrecked by Cyclone Heta in early January and the government has been preparing a comprehensive recovery plan to present to aid donors.

Mr Vivian says some money is earmarked for public buildings but most of it will go on housing because many more people need to be housed.

"The houses that they have now are partly damaged,....all the houses need reroofing and underneath most houses, you need the lining to be repaired or replaced and also electricity and plumbing to be replaced, because they have been deroofed and the water came right through the building."

Young Vivian says 60 houses are being built, while he would like another 40 houses constructed.

He says well more than 250 houses need repairs.
