Navy averts oil slick threat in New Caledonia

A possible pollution problem off the south of New Caledonia has been warded off.

The French high commission says the navy contained a roughly 20-square-kilometre slick which threatened the unspoilt island of Amedee.

The fuel leaked from a ship that had run aground on a reef several years ago.

The high commission also says much of the fuel has evaporated.
