Fiji's Great Council says it will do everything it can to solve land lease problems

The chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs says the council will do everything it can to solve the country's land lease problems.

Ratu Epeli Ganilau also says the current Agricultural Landlord and Tenant Act, or ALTA, is the best law to govern the leasing of farm land.

Fiji TV says Ratu Epeli made the comments at a weekend meeting of the Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Association in Nadi.

Ratu Epeli said the ALTA legislation was a testimony to goodwill and negotiations and he intends to honour that commitment.

He says land leases should be resolved before the restructure of the sugar industry because the reform would be useless if no cane was produced.

Similarly, Ratu Epeli says the land would be useless to indigenous landowners if they received no return from it.
