Fiji Hotel Association wants fishing laws clarified

4:24 pm on 29 March 2004

The head of the Fiji Hotel Association, Olivia Pareti, says the government must clarify traditional fishing laws to secure the future of the tourism industry.

There have been local media reports of villagers harassing tourists and operators at some resorts near Nadi to press claims for the use of waters they say are traditional fishing grounds.

Ms Pareti says the Hotel Association is asking the government to be proactive in dealing with the issue of indigenous fishing rights.

"It's just a matter of trying to clarify these two particular cases that have been reported to us. And I think what has happened also is because it has been reported in the media it's created a lot of attention, but I think there has hardly been any effect on the industry as a whole. But it has a potential to do so if it goes unaddressed as its is right now."
