Costs rise for Fiji road accidents

11:35 am on 1 April 2004

The cost of motor vehicle accidents in Fiji has been put at 18-million US dollars a year.

The total has been attributed to medical costs, loss of assets, lost income and suffering, as well as administration and operational costs.

The Daily Post newspaper says the figures have been given by a senior health ministry official, Dr Setareki Vatiocawaqa, who has based it on statistics provided by the National Road Safety Council and the Insurance industry.

He is quoted as saying more than 1200 people have been killed on Fiji's roads in the last 15 years, and many thousands injured.
