French Polynesians to elect new Assembly next month

9:14 am on 3 April 2004

French Polynesia will have elections next month.

The announcement came only hours after the French Council of Ministers in Paris dissolved the Assembly following a formal request from the French Polynesian President, Gaston Flosse, ten days ago.

Mr Flosse said he wanted to go to the polls because French Polynesia's new statute of autonomy had come into effect in February.

When making his request to the French president, Mr Flosse said he expected the elections to be held in October.

The May election will be held under a new voting system and will see the ruling Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party face an unprecedented coalition of opposition parties.
