NZ doctor in Vanuatu questions NZ official's role in possible forced departure

A Vanuatu-based New Zealand doctor is asking whether pressure from New Zealand aid and health officials has anything to do with his possible forced departure from Vanuatu.

Derek Allen has rushed a number of patients to New Zealand for treatment.

Following a recent case involving twin girls needing heart surgery, Dr Allen says he has been advised by Vanuatu's Director General of Health that his contract will not be renewed.

Derek Allen says bringing the twins to New Zealand annoyed Foreign Affairs and Health officials and they may have had some say in the decision.

NZ Aid, which distributes New Zealand's foreign aid, say they had no contact with Vanuatu about Dr Allen's employment.
