Fiji mining union against South African takeover bid

4:39 pm on 8 April 2004

In Fiji, the National Union of Mineworkers is objecting to the takeover of the Emperor Golding Mining Limited by South Africa's Durban Roodeport Deep, or DRD.

Radio Fiji says the union is basing its objections on DRD's poor track record of dealing with its indigenous workers in South Africa and Papua New Guinea.

The union says if DRD takes over, it may not recognize any High Court ruling made on behalf of its members who have been on strike for 13 years.

It has given its objections in writing to the Minister for Labour, Kenneth Zinck.
