1:01 pm on 9 April 2004

A second person has died in flooding in Fiji which has been hit by a tropical depression.

Police say a woman was swept away as she tried to cross the flooded Wainimala River in Naitasiri province.

This follows the death in Rakiraki of a woman who was swept off a flooded bridge.

Several other people, including a diving party of five, are reported missing at sea.

Flooding was reported from Ba, Rakiraki and rural areas north of Suva and Nausori

Many roads and bridges were flooded and closed to traffic.

The rain has eased and the flood waters have begun receding.

But forecasters say a low pressure system off Solomon Islands may affect Fiji on Sunday.
