New Caledonia opens election registration process

10:54 am on 12 April 2004

The registry has opened in New Caledonia for lists to be submitted for the territorial elections due to be held on May the 9th.

Lists have to be lodged by Sunday by the candidate who tops the line-up.

Voting will be for the three provincial assemblies, which in turn will determine the make up of the territorial congress.

The government will then be formed in proportion to the representation in the Congress.

Parties of the pro-independence FLNKS movement have already said they won't have a single list.

The anti-independence camp will see the RPCR compete against a number of high-profile party dissidents who have joined the Alliance to stand on a separate list under the name, A Future Together.
