Fiji businesses threaten to sue Suva City Council for flood problems

9:46 am on 13 April 2004

Businesses in the Fiji capital are threatening to sue the Suva City Council following Thursday afternoon's flash floods which saw more than knee deep water in the streets of the central city.

Water entered many shops and damaged goods believed to be in the millions of dollars.

Some banking services had to be temporarily suspended because of the fear of electrocution from wet power cables.

Businesses are blaming the local council saying it had failed to provide adequate drainage for then capital.

But a senior official is quoted as saying the heavy rainfall was an Act of God and there was nothing the council could have done about it.
