A state of emergency has been declared on the Micronesian island of Yap two days after a devastating storm.

Typhoon Sudal battered the chain of atolls for over five hours with winds of more than 200 kilometres an hour and waves more than 10 metres high.

The government of the Federated States of Micronesia says only one person died during the storm, but nearly all public utilities are damaged, leaving most villages without water and power.

The island's hospital has been damaged, over 90 per cent of private homes were damaged or destroyed and nearly all crops have been ruined.
