Vanuatu police undertake election screening inquiry

11:20 am on 23 April 2004

The Vanuatu police commissioner says an internal investigation is to determine how routine police screening of electoral candidates failed.

This follows a revelation the now president, Mr Alfred Maseng Nalo, should never have been allowed to stand because he's serving a suspended sentence for receiving stolen goods.

The electoral commission says they followed proper procedures and police gave clearance for all candidates prior to the election.

Police commissioner Deniro admits one of his own officers was involved.

"I have launched an internal investigation into the events that led...the events that led...that surround..as I understand, one of my junior officers... was approached instead of the office of the police commissioner."

Mr Deniro says he'll decide what appropriate action to take with the un-named junior officer, after investigations end.
