American Samoa's attorney general questions powers of committee

3:42 pm on 3 May 2004

American Samoa's attorney general, Fiti Sunia, is questioning the powers of the Senate select investigative committee.

This follows the SSIC issuing a subpoena to question the director of the department of Parks and Recreation, Seui Laau, over spending at the government-owned golf course.

Seui did not attend the committee hearing, reportedly after he had been told by the attorney general not to do so.

Our correspondent, Fili Sagapolutele, says this is not the first time Fiti Sunia has challenged the committee's work and he has specific concerns.

"The resolution establishing the SSIC is way too broad and there are some issues in the subpoena that need to be clarified. So, right now, the director hasn't testified yet but they're expecting to issue another subpoena very very soon."
