Police in New Caledonia have opened an inquiry into an attack on the premises of the government of the southern province, it is reported.

They say a molotov cocktail was thrown late on Monday night but failed to explode, Agence France Presse news agency reports.

Police also say a window broke after a gun shot was fired at the building.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

A guard was alerted by some noise but the perpetrators escaped in a car at high speed.

Security has been tightened.
