Nomination process for PNG governor general allegedly flawed

3:43 pm on 6 May 2004

Reports from Papua New Guinea say some of the four Governor-General candidates are likely to be rejected by the Clerk of Parliament, Ano Pala.

Mr Pala is expected to make a ruling today.

The National newspaper says this comes after he sighted defective nominations in the forms submitted to him on Monday.

The four candidates are Sir Paulias Matane, Sir Joseph Nombri, Sir Pato Kakaraya and Sir Albert Kipalan.

He says whichever way he rules, the matter is still likely to head back to the courtrooms.

Mr Pala spent some time in the last couple of days consulting constitutional office holders, church leaders and senior leaders on the interpretation of the constitutional requirement of a Governor-General.
