About 500 have marched through the capital of Indonesia's Papua province, in a protest demanding better human rights.

The Papuans, in the Coalition of Civilians for Human Rights, rallied in Jayapura last Wednesday to criticise of their territory's integration into Indonesia, the Jakarta Post reports.

The newspaper adds that the protesters on the march claimed that the integration had violated Papuans' human rights.

A spokesman for the group, Markus Haluk, told the Jakarta Post that, for the Indonesian government, May 1, 1963 was seen as a victory, because as Papua joined the Unitary State of the Indonesian Republic.

But Mr Haluk said it was seen as a bad day for Papuans, because human rights abuses took place during the integration.
