Cook Islands creche hit by small tornado

3:58 pm on 13 May 2004

A small tornado has blown the roof off a newly opened creche opposite Rarotonga Airport.

The Cook Islands' Meteorological Service has confirmed the tornado which happened just after 5am yesterday, saying conditions of low pressure the previous day were conducive to its formation.

While they cannot keep track of tornadoes, a Met Service spokesman, Motu Simpson, says the damage sustained by the creche is consistent with that caused by a tornado or water spout.
