PNG Enga governor says investigation into Porgera shootings needed

2:55 pm on 17 May 2004

The governor of Enga province in Papua New Guinea is standing by his claims that 19 people have been shot at Porgera gold mine.

Peter Ipatas says landowner groups at the mine were the source of reports to him on the number of people who have been shot at by security guards.

He says people are trespassing at the mine site and they may need to be educated about what they're doing wrong.

But, Mr Ipatas says police should be investigating whether that number of shooting incidents has occurred.

"I've got these figures from the landowners group, the people on the mine site, that is over a period of five or six years. It's for the appropriate authorities like the police and the department of mining to actually carry out an investigation to, you know, confirm or deny these landowners' claims."

Mr Ipatas says he's had meetings with the ministers for police and mining and believe it's likely that an investigation will be announced shortly.
