Two men to stand trial in connection with killing of former Solomons police commissioner

The Solomon Islands high court has rejected a bid by two men that they had no case to answer in connection with last year's killing of a former police commissioner, Sir Fred Soaki.

The two former policemen, Allen Maelalia and Ronny Oeta, were on trial at the High Court last week over the shooting death in Auki as they were allegedly at the scene of the killing.

Both were alleged to be accomplices of Edmond Sae, a former police staff sergeant, who is the main suspect in the killing, but who escaped from police custody.

The judge has ruled that they have a case to answer because they failed to notify the authorities of the shooting even though they were policemen.
