Federal officials in Guam to check on local education department

Federal education officials have arrived in Guam to oversee their local counterparts.

The Pacific Daily News says officials from the US Department of Education are visiting schools and checking on the progress of the Guam education department in meeting the special conditions set by federal officials last year.

The failure by Guam officials to perform audits from 1998 to 2001 prompted the federal government to set conditions for obtaining federal money for Guam public schools.

US federal law requires agencies that receive federal money to audit their financial records on a yearly basis.
