Members of the Regional Assistance Mission in Solomons Islands and police officers have removed a WW2 bomb weighing nearly a thousand kilograms during an operation at Munda in Western province.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports that a total of 386 munitions were disposed of.

The Acting Police Commissioner, Ben McDevitt, says dealing with World War Two ordinance is a very risky business and the expertise shown by officers from the police and Ramis was vital to the success of the operation.

Mr McDevitt says villages have been living with these remnants of war for almost sixty years, knowing the dangers, but unable to do anything about them.
