Deaf round-the-world sailor robbed in American Samoa

9:29 am on 26 May 2004

A man who is trying to be the first deaf person to sail unaccompanied around the world has been robbed while his boat was tied up at American Samoa's Malaloa anchorage in Pago Pago.

Charles deVilliers who left Texas in March on his yacht Island Time says he was

prepared for challenging weather and boat maintenance and felt confident that he could overcome these obstacles.

But he didn't plan on thieves sneaking aboard his vessel at night and stealing needed - and expensive - equipment.

Mr de Villiers who was asleep on his boat at the time, says the thieves took his camcorder, laptop, emergency flares and other equipment and food.
