Fiji attorney general says release request must come from Speight personally

12:36 pm on 26 May 2004

Fiji's attorney general says any request to release the coup front man, George Speight, must come from the prisoner himself.

Qoriniasi Bale has told the Fiji Sun newspaper the issue of his early release has been brought up time and again by the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua party.

But Mr Bale says Speight himself has not made any request for his release.

Mr Bale's comment came as Speight's brother and Conservative Alliance MP, Samisoni Tikonisau, said party supporters in Speight's home province of Tailevu want him released.

Mr Tikonisau the party will reveal its plans and legal processes for Speight's early release at its annual general meeting on Friday.
