Fiji power company wants to raise prices

The state-owned Fiji Electricity Authority wants to increase tariffs because of rising oil prices.

The company's chairman, Joe Mar, has told the Fiji Times he hopes the government will allow the tariff increase as soon the current moratorium on prices ends in September.

Mr Mar says there has been no tariff increase for 13 years and a decrease was imposed in 1998.

The Authority is planning capital expenditure of almost 200-million US dollars over a four-year period ending in 2006, to increase generating capacity to meet the demand for power.
