Disgruntled staffer has a say when Samoa's Parlament goes to air

9:26 pm on 1 June 2004

Live broadcasts of Parliament by state radio in Samoa, which started this week, did not begin well.

As the Minister of Agriculture, Tuisugaletaua Sofara, was tabling a report, a Legislative Assembly staffer, translating the proceedings into English, was heard whispering, in Samoan, that it was all lies.

The SBC is required by law to broadcast parliament in the two official languages, Samoan and English.

After the Finance Minister Misa Telefoni had presented his Budget and then prepared to speak again on another issue, the translator was heard clearly groaning 'Ah, what next.'
