The first challenger to officially launch his campaign for the governor's post in American Samoa has collected a substantial sum in donations.

Afoa Moega Lutu is one of four, including the incumbent Togiola Tulafono, who have declared their intention to stand in the elections in November.

A crowd of 2,000 people turned up for Afoa's launch and his team collected more than 140,000 U.S. dollars in cash as contributions to his campaign.

Our correspondent, Fili Sagapolutele, says Afoa made clear the grounds on which he was standing.

"To restore trust and integrity in government, including people's faith in its leaders. And, the confidence of the United States government into the local government's ability to manage its own finances."

Fili Sagapolutele says this will be a key issue in the campaign as investigations continue into allegations of widespread corruption in the territorial government.
