Solomon Islands police arrest two men suspected of torching cathedral on Malaita

10:24 am on 4 June 2004

Solomon Island police have reported a breakaway group from the Anglican Church has torched the furniture and ornaments of a cathedral in Malaita province.

Police from the provincial capital of Auki say they have caught the leader and his brother in connection with the incident.

The group had carried out the act saying they were following instructions from God.

Meanwhile the Anglican Bishop for Malaita, Terry Brown, has condemned the act saying it is clear that another kind of violence - religious violence, so common in other parts of the world has now come to Malaita.

The incident comes a month before the Archibishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams is due to visit the Solomons.
