Speaker in French Polynesia says territory won't leave the French Republic

7:27 am on 7 June 2004

The new speaker in the French Polynesian assembly says there's no question of the territory leaving the French republic.

Antony Geros says his Union for Democracy party's been elected on the basis of ongoing social problems in the territory and not for independence.

Mr Geros says voters wanted to oust Gaston Flosse, who'd been in power for more than 20 years.

He says the people elected his party for its programme of economic and political policies.

Mr Geros underlines the links with France on a political and economic level will stay, keeping what he calls a complete interdependence.
