5:40 pm on 8 June 2004

The number two nobles' representative of Tongatapu in Tonga, has retracted a comment he made in the debate over the opening address from the Throne of the Legislative Assembly.

The Hon. Vaha'i told the House that he refused a motion made by the deputy prime minister on the day to have his comment deleted from the minutes of the proceedings.

But he told members of parliament yesterday that he's now changed his mind and that he has agreed to his comment being withdrawn.

During original discussions, the Hon. Vaha'i moved that an additional paragraph be made to the draft version, in connection with the expected arrival of foreign investors with a fifty million US dollar investment opportunity.

The Hon. Vaha'i told the House that they should warn His Majesty against so-called foreign investors or con-men that had caused problems in the past.

He cited for an example the court jester who was responsible for the disappearance of millions of dollars in the United States.

In stating his retraction, Hon. Vaha'i said he now values the investment initiatives revealed by His Majesty.
