Fiji's parliamentary committee on social services is calling on the government to consider setting up a rehabilitation centre for drug users.
The Daily Post says the committee chairman, Col Jonetani Kaukeimoce, also wants the government to review the current practice of sending drug users to Fiji's only psychiatric hospital.
The calls are part of the Illicit Drug Control Bill currently being debated in parliament.
The bill provides for very stiff penalties including life imprisonment for those found guilty of trans-national drug trafficking.
The bill will give powers to the authorities to search and detain suspected persons without warrant, intercept phone calls and track suspects.
It coincides with yesterday's raid and closure in Suva of the largest meth-amphetamine laboratory ever found in the southern hemisphere.
