10:41 am on 23 June 2004

A report from Fiji says a young woman who died of AIDS had to be buried secretly at midnight by members of a village rugby team because relatives refused to touch her.

The Fiji Times says the incident occurred at a village in Bua province on the island of Vanua Levu.

A health officer in Labasa who did not want to be named is quoted as saying the 19-year old woman was buried wrapped in the mat she had been lying on for three months after relatives refused to take care of her.

He says members of the village rugby team had to bury her at midnight because they did not want everyone to know.
