Samoa police recritment campaign underway

10:30 am on 28 June 2004

Samoa's Commissioner of Police Papalii Lorenese Neru says the police force needs more recruits with tertiary qualifications and more women.

Currently seeking more recruits the Ministry of Police, Prisons and Fire Service has shortlisted over 400 applicants.

Papalii says the force is looking for special people with special qualities ... honest mature young people who are capable of shouldering the many demands that policing places on police offers and their families.

Applicants shortlisted so far will undergo a further selection process before they start basic training.

They then have to pass a 13-week training course and examinations before they graduate.

Earlier in the month Papalii said the ministry was carrying out a programme of profound reform to improve the force.
