FBI to probe death of American Samoan port director

3:52 pm on 1 July 2004

The Federal Bureau of Investigations has agreed to look into the death of a former American Samoan port director, Seugogo Herman Schirmer.

Senator Alo Stevenson asked the FBI for assistance after doubts were raised that Seugogo had committed suicide.

He was found dead in April and police said at the time it was a suicide but it has been revealed since that an autopsy found two bullet entries and exits.

The FBI first needs to review the case files and evidence collected by local police which have yet to be released by the Department of Public Safety to Seugogo's family.

According to Alo, the FBI is aware that the territory has a serious crime problem and that many cases have not been solved.
