Police in Vanuatu take action after protestors call for election boycott

8:59 pm on 1 July 2004

The Vanuatu Electoral Commission says it has asked police to arrest several people calling for a boycott of next week's national election.

The chief electoral officer, Martin Tete, says the Commission acted after being contacted by people in Malampa province who reported a group putting up posters calling for a boycott.

He says that contravenes the Electoral Act.

Mr Tete says he is not sure why such a protest had been mounted.

"but according to some of the information that we have heard from the police they say that they totally disagree with the decision of Government to dissolve the parliament..."
