Forum delegates to meet French Polynesia president

10:47 am on 6 July 2004

Representatives of the Pacific Islands Forum are expected to meet the president of French Polynesia today.

The visitors are to sound out French Polynesia's claim for observership status within the Forum.

The news agency Tahitipresse says delegates will also meet the speaker and deputy speaker in the course of their six-day visit.

And, they will also meet business and union leaders, as well as religious authorities.

The territory has passed new statutes of autonomy since its former President, Gaston Flosse, met forum representatives to talk about the observer issue last March.

The representatives had been waiting for the new autonomy provisions to take hold before evaluating the bid to become an observer at the forum.
