Papua New Guinea MP calls for Government to fully finance mining projects

3:36 pm on 9 July 2004

The West Sepik Governor Carlos Yuni has called for the Papua New Guinea Government to fully own and operate mining projects in the country.

The Post Courier reports Mr Yuni made the call in Parliament calling on Mining Minister Sam Akoitai to allow 100 per cent Papua New Guinean owned financial institutions in the country to own and operate mining and forestry projects.

Mr Akoitai says the role of the Government was to regulate the mining projects in the country through the Mining Department.

He says with the people of the country calling for goods and services to be provided to them it was hard for the Government to fund a mining project on its own.
