Papua New Guinea's prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, has asked the Catholic Church to help the government reintroduce firmer discipline in schools.

Sir Michael told the a crowd of over ten thousand at the Church's General assembly in East New Britain that in the past, when school discipline was very strict, the church had said it was against humanity.

He said the church needed to look at the school curriculum and the question of school discipline anew, saying tough discipline was essential to mould youths into law-abiding and productive citizens.
