Vanuatu election results to be announced this afternoon

1:30 pm on 15 July 2004

The formal results of the last week's national elections in Vanuatu are to be made public this afternoon.

The Electoral Commission delayed the planned release this morning - the latest in a series of delays surrounding the figures.

The unofficial results had shown that nine parties had taken l43 of the 52 seats, with the balance held by independents.

Those figures showed that the National United Party of Ham Lini had the most seats with ten, with Serge Vohor's Union of Moderate Parties holding nine, and the Vanuaaku Party eight.

Various coalitions have been mooted but commentators say serious negotiations will not begin until the official results are out.
