PNG plans to subsidise logging

4:21 pm on 22 July 2004

A confidential report obtained by a Papua New Guinea newspaper reveals that the government is planning to sudsidise the logging industry.

The Post Courier says the report outlines proposals to subsidise logging companies' borrowing costs and also allow them to remit their profits to parent companies overseas.

Other proposals include ensuring the availability of land to set up downstream processing plants, a review of export taxes 10 years after the commencement of production in those plants and an exemption of import duty on all machinery and equipment intended for processing.
