Pacific Arts Festival causes traffic problems in Palau

6:33 am on 27 July 2004

The large crowds attending the 9th Festival of Pacific Arts being held in Palau are placing a major strain on the infrastructure in the capital Koror.

Police are working up to 14 hour shifts to keep traffic under control as Sara Vui Talitu reports.

"Almost around the clock, constant streams of vehicles crawl through the one and only main street of the capital, Koror, which runs right through the centre of the festival villages where many of the events are being held."

Many drivers have been frustrated and impatient given major delays.

Police are having to juggle directing traffic with ensuring pedestrians are crossing safely.

Some officers are saying that public transport for this festival should have been better organised, so that people could have used it.
