Director of the Fiji Human Rights Commission given UN role

The director of the Fiji Human Rights Commission, Dr Shaista Shameem, has been appointed a United Nations Special Rapporteur.

Her job will involve monitoring the role of mercenaries as a means of impeding the right of people to self-determination.

Dr Shameem will also assist in the further development of international law on mercenaries.

She will continue to be director of the Fiji Human Rights Commission while she performs her functions as a UN Special Rapporteur.
