PNG wants to send fruitpickers to New Zealand

The Papua New Guinea trade minister, Paul Tiensten, says expanding ties with New Zealand could see PNG workers go as fruitpickers to New Zealand.

After talks with a New Zealand trade delegation in Port Moresby, Mr Tiensten said bilateral trade could grow with New Zealand buying gas from PNG as New Zealand fields are getting depleted.

Mr Tiensten also says he hopes New Zealand will relax some quarantine restriction on PNG produce and hire PNG workers.

"You probably need a lot of labour to assist in doing the fruit harvesting and these are the things on which we can work the details."
