American Samoan governor to raise deployment of soldiers at meeting in Hawaii

The American Samoan governor, Togiola Tulafono, is to raise the issue of the deployment of soldiers when he meets the army command in Hawaii this week.

The governor has said he is concerned that American Samoa's entire unit will be deployed at the same time because it will have a serious social and economic impact on families and the territory.

It is being mobilised, along with other Pacific islands' units, in August for deployment to Iraq early next year.

Togiola is meeting the commander of the 9th Regional Pacific army in Hawaii, Brigadier General, John Ma, who has said it's difficult to stagger the deployment.

Our correspondent, Fili Sagapolutele, says the governor could appeal to officials in Washington.

"The governor is saying it will be a major impact, specifically in the area of public safety, protecting the safety of the territory. A large number of the deployed soldiers, or mobilised soldiers, are from the department of public safety and other government agencies."

Fili Sagapolutele says the families of soldiers are saying they should be deployed together because they've trained together.
